This article is about how to fix common plumbing problems.
There are three different ways to fix a leak and that is to join two iron pipes together, connecting two pipes that can be either like or unlike types of pipes: joining pipes together by the IPS method. IPS is short for Iron Pipe Size, the compression method or by soldering which is discussed in another article.
When fixing a leak, you may need to join two brass joints or nipples together using the IPS method. Take some Teflon tape and wrap it around the pipe 3 times in a clockwise direction around the thread. Once this is done, use pipe dope to cover the threads. You don’t need much, just a little bit. Once you have got this pipe dope around the Teflon tape, it is sealed, so now take your pipe and put it slowly into the wall fitting and screw the pipe into the wall fitting. You may need a wrench if it is difficult to turn. Turn it clockwise – you will not need to turn it too far, as the threads are tapered and you will only need to turn on the first three or four threads.
The second way to join two pipes together if you are trying to fix a leak, is using a compression method which works on a different mechanism. Using a 3/8 compressor pump compression coupling join two of joints together. The compression joint method joins these two pipes together using a nut and feral system. The feral is a brass ring, and the threads are only in the nuts. Hold one pipe down onto the other pipe. In this way, the nut and feral are threaded onto the pipe coupling. As you turn the nut down, the brass ring or feral inside the pipe actually crushes down onto the pipe so tightly, that it becomes a piece of the pipe. Use adjustable wrenches to tighten as needed. The third way is to hire plumbers Hawke’s Bay and pay them to do it instead.
In this article we have learnt how to stop plumbing leaks by joining two pipes together using two different methods: IPS method and compression.
